These sculptures are in the
collection of the sculptor, Lucien den Arend, and form part of
the permanent exhibition on the Penttilä Estate in Kangasniemi Finland.
Up to 2006 these sculptures have never been exhibited at the home
and studio of the sculptor. He lived and worked on the edge of the
urban area of a town in Holland. His front door and back door opened
directly onto the street. His large sculptures were always on loan
to museums or public collections, in parks, private gardens and on
a sheep farm.
Now he and his family live on
a former estate - a combination of a farm, nursery and greenhouses
- surrounded by vast forests. Penttilä is situated on a sunny slope facing the south west. This is
the main location for den Arend's sculpture. Trees were planted in
most of the fields, which surrounded the buildings, half a century ago. Only the large former berry field
was left open; but birches soon found their way here. Most of them
have now been cut down to make room for the underground geothermic
heating system for the buildings. In this way the slope is now open
again and forms a perfect entourage for the installation of
sculptures.
